PLATINUM JUBILEE BATTLE OF ZOJILA 01 NOV 2023

PLATINUM JUBILEE BATTLE OF ZOJILA 01 NOV 2023 Operation Bison (Battle of Zojila) was fought from 23 May to 01 Nov 1948 and was a critical turning point during the Indo-Pak War of 1948. The victory of Indian Army ensured that Kargil & Leh were not cut off from Srinagar. The battle was significant, since tanks were inducted and employed at such altitudes, for the first time ever in the history of warfare. For display of sheer grit and courage during the battle, a total of eleven Maha Vir Chakras and Thirty One Vir Chakras were conferred. Platinum Jubilee of the Battle was organized by Forever In Operations Division under the aegis of Fire & Fury Corps, at Zojila War Memorial, Gumri, Dras on 1st November 2023. Homage was paid to the soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice as well as those who fought in the historic battle. Wreaths were laid by General Officer Commanding, Forever in Operations Division as well as representatives from Indian Army Units which were part of Operation Bison. Floral respects were also paid by other attendees which included Ex-servicemen, Local Village Heads and School Children. A movie on Battle of Zojila was displayed for the attendees. The event was also witnessed by the grandson of Sh Mohd Ismail, a porter during Op Bison, who was awarded Maha Vir Chakra for his gallant contribution. With a view of providing knowledge to the Indian Public about the events which unfolded during this battle, the Indian Army has renovated the existing War Memorial. The revamping includes placing of a bust of Gen KS Thimayya, a T-55 tank, a 75/24 Howitzer Gun, a 3.7 inch Gun along with various boards illustrating the history of the Battle. In order to attract more tourists, a 'Selfie Point' and 'Battle of Zojila View Point' have also been put in place.
